Is One Supposed to Self-Planarize?

Academics often see or hear advice not to put too many references to one’s own work in an article to be submitted for publication. Among other reasons, it is said that referees will then know who wrote it. However, anyone with a somewhat lengthy career has normally published quite a lot. One’s new work always builds on one’s previous work and of course one is always more familiar with one’s own work than with that of any other individual (not that you don’t cite a lot more of others collectively than of your own). So what is one supposed to do? Are we supposed to self-plagiarize, make use of our previous work to build on without citing it?
